The Session Convention is nearly here

It’s regular date in my calendar now and The Session is back in January. Organised by my good friend, and all round top magician, Andi Gladwin it’s a fantastic two day event and in 2012 will move to a new venue in Cheltenham. Closer to home. Nice. Magicians fly in from all over the world to be there – it’s a real chance to see the cream of the conjuring crop. Regular readers will know that last year I interviewed David Berglas at the Session for their lifetime achievement award. I’m more than pleased to say that I’ll be doing the same again for this year’s recipient, Chris Kenner. Chris is a major influence in magic today – notable for his incredible close-up work, he went on to become the Executive Producer for David Copperfield in Las Vegas. He’s also passionate about encouraging young people to get into and improve their magic. I’m really looking forward to finding out more about his life and views on magic. I’m reading as much as I can about his work at the moment and, even though I’m not a finger flicking sleight of hand artist, I know it’s going to a great event. See you there?

Here we go doing magic again

Well, it’s been a while I know and the ever present promise to keep up this blog is failing miserably. However, I’m going to make a concerted effort to get back to this as there’s plenty to say again.

Where to start?

Well, the good news is that Evening of Deception is back for 2012. See the poster below. We’ve had overwhelming response to tickets so far with Friday sold out already and Saturday not far off. To help with demand we’ve added an extra night so the show now runs from 22-25th February 2012 at the Everyman Studio in Cheltenham. I’m delighted that we’ve got two new perfomers for you – Kerry Scorah and Peter Clifford. They’ll be joining regular ole me and magician Andi Gladwin. We’re really excited to be bringing the show to Cheltenham again. Hope you can join us.

As for other quick updates, this Friday I’m performing a short magic set at a colleague’s leaving party. No pressure of performing in front of other colleagues then. Im really looking forward to it.

And I’m really pleased that the organiser’s of the Session Convention have asked me to conduct the interview for their guest of honour at next years convention. Chris Kenner, who’s magic career spans nearly thirty years from close-up to his current job at exec producer for David Copperfield, will be in Cheltenham to receive the Session’s lifetime achievement award. Its a rare chance to hear from a man that’s been so influential in so many different areas of magic. See elsewhere on this blog for this years interview I did with David Berglas.

The good news for me is that the convention is moving to Cheltenham this year which is closer to home than ever. They want to hold it in my front room in 2013 but my wife is a bit worried about numbers….

Just a quickie but I’ve just found out that you can read my Cotswold Life article online here :

The Resurgence of Magic is here

I’m pleased to say that the article I’ve written on the resurgence of magic is in this months “Cotswold Life” magazine. Ive had some great feedback from laypeople who have read it and found it really interesting. That pleases me because thats exactly who I wrote it for. Id be keen to hear your thoughts as well. More details at Here’s the pic that is published in the article taken by Paul Duggan. Have I got too much magic?

The resurgence of magic…coming soon

I was asked by the lovely people at Cotswold Life magazine to write an article for them on the resurgence of magic. I’m pleased to say that it’ll be in next months issue. Without giving too much away I’ve been looking at what’s led up to the sudden interest in magic and what it means for the art now and in the future. It also gave me a chance to tell the story of JN Maskelyne who was from Cheltenham and the role he had in shaping modern magic. I’ll hopefully be able to put a copy of the article up here in the future as well. But please do buy a copy and let me know what you think. In the meantime, keep a watch out for some more news about An Evening of Deception. It’s on it’s way back!
